A day after the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad’s foundation day programme in central Kolkata, the Kolkata Police have registered a suo motu case against Trinamool Congress supremo and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the organisers of the event, alleging violations of conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court.
The case was registered at Hastings Police Station on August 28 in connection with the programme held on Cathedral Road on Friday. Police have alleged that the organisers failed to comply with several directions issued by the court for the rally and that some participants clashed with personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
"The FIR has been registered for the alleged violation of the court's order. The role of all those involved in the violation will be examined during the course of the investigation. The case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on August 28," police reportedly said.
The Calcutta High Court had permitted the TMCP foundation day programme subject to a number of conditions. Among them was a direction that one flank of Cathedral Road should remain open to traffic. Police allege that the condition was not followed and that both sides of the road were closed during the rally.
The court had also allowed the programme to take place between noon and 3 pm. According to the police, however, the event continued beyond the permitted time.
The FIR followed a complaint submitted by sub-inspector Apu Baidya of Hastings Police Station. Police sources alleged that Banerjee and the organisers had entered into a criminal conspiracy and, in pursuance of it, violated the directions issued by the high court.
The police have also alleged that supporters attending the TMCP programme broke barricades and pushed and jostled with officers deployed at the venue.
Police also alleged that during the programme, TMCP supporters "broke barricades and jostled with policemen deployed for maintaining law and order, leading to a chaotic situation."
The case will now examine whether the court-imposed restrictions were breached and the role, if any, of Banerjee and other organisers in the alleged violations. The police said the investigation would cover all those suspected of involvement in the incident.
