Madhya Pradesh minister and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya sparked controversy by asserting that India could face a civil war in 30 years due to large-scale demographic changes, news agency PTI reported.
Speaking at a Raksha Bandhan event on Sunday (August 18), Vijayvargiya said, "Social harmony is very important for the present time. Recently, I was talking to a retired military officer who is very active in social work. He said the way our country's demography is changing, a civil war will start after 30 years. Such a situation may arise that you people will not be able to live."
Vijayvargiya, along with some RSS leaders, participated in an event titled 'Samajik Samrasta Rakshabandhan Parv,' where woman sanitation workers tied rakhis to them.
"We have to think and contemplate on this matter. We should work on how to strengthen the word Hindu," Vijayvargiya added.
The BJP leader claimed that some individuals aim to divide Hindus along caste lines to gain power by employing the British strategy of 'divide and rule,' reported PTI.
Vijayvargiya’s statement was condemned by the opposition Congress, which described it as irresponsible and demanded that Vijayvargiya issue an immediate apology.
MP Congress spokesperson Neelabh Shukla condemned Vijayvargiya's remarks as "highly irresponsible," arguing that they create an environment of instability and fear, while jeopardizing peace and unity in the country. He called for Vijayvargiya to make a public apology.
Shukla further demanded that Vijayvargiya should reveal the identity of the retired army officer and explain why the officer harbours such fears of a civil war.
