Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)], an important ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has urged caution on the ‘One Nation One Election’ Bill, stressing the need for extensive consultations before its implementation.
The party has warned against hastily pushing through the legislation, advocating for a more deliberate and inclusive approach to the proposed electoral reforms.
The concern was raised during an all-party meeting convened by the BJP-led NDA government ahead of the Budget session of Parliament, as reported by The New Indian Express.
The meeting was chaired by Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Kiren Rijiju, J.P. Nadda, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and L. Murugan.
During the discussion, JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha stressed the importance of proceeding with caution on the proposed legislation, which seeks to synchronize Lok Sabha and state assembly elections.
The Bill has already been referred to a 39-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further review.
Leaders from several political parties, including the Congress, CPI(M), and Trinamool Congress (TMC), participated in the meeting.
Apart from concerns over the Bill, JD(U) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) also raised objections regarding the seating arrangement in the new Lok Sabha building, an issue initially flagged by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. The MPs argued that the arrangements were made unilaterally, without proper consultation.
With Opposition MPs preparing to confront the government on multiple fronts—including allegations of mismanagement and VVIP culture contributing to the stampede at Maha Kumbh, as well as procedural lapses in the functioning of the Waqf JPC—the stage is set for a potentially heated Budget session.
