Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Monday (June 23) sharply criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision to launch airstrikes on Iran, calling it a contradiction of his earlier advocacy for dialogue with Tehran.
The senior Congress leader also urged the Indian government to adopt a firmer and more principled position in response to the escalating conflict.
In a post on X, Ramesh wrote, “President Trump’s decision to unleash US airpower on Iran makes a mockery of his own calls for the continuation of talks with Iran.”
He reiterated the Indian National Congress’s demand for immediate diplomatic engagement and dialogue, stating that such an approach was essential to de-escalate tensions.
Ramesh also took aim at the Narendra Modi-led government, accusing it of maintaining silence on both the US strikes in Iran and Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
“The Indian National Congress reiterates the absolute essentiality of immediate diplomacy and dialogue with Iran. The Government of India must demonstrate greater moral courage than it has so far. The Modi Government has unequivocally neither criticised nor condemned the US bombing and Israel’s aggression, bombings and targeted assassinations. It has also maintained a deafening silence on the genocide being perpetrated on the Palestianians in Gaza.” Ramesh stated.
The criticism from Ramesh comes in the wake of President Trump’s announcement on Sunday that US forces had launched a series of precision airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, targeting facilities at Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan.
Trump had described the strikes as “very successful” and aimed at destroying Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, speaking at a press briefing alongside Air Force General Dan Caine, confirmed that the strikes had significantly degraded Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
“Last night, on President Trump’s order, the US Central Command conducted a precision strike in the middle of the night against three nuclear facilities in Iran – Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz – in order to destroy or severely degrade Iran’s nuclear programme,” Hegseth said, hailing the operation as an “incredible and overwhelming success.”
He further clarified that the mission was not intended to target Iranian military personnel or civilians and stressed that regime change was not the objective.
“The order we received from our Commander-in-Chief was focused, it was powerful, and it was clear. We devastated the Iranian nuclear program,” Hegseth said.
The strikes mark a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, and have drawn strong international reactions, with observers warning of a broader regional fallout.
The senior Congress leader also urged the Indian government to adopt a firmer and more principled position in response to the escalating conflict.
