The Opposition INDIA bloc and the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Wednesday (December 18), the clashed over controversial remarks made by Home Minister Amit Shah about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, with the Opposition demanding his dismissal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also accused the Congress and its "rotten ecosystem" of attempting to hide "malicious lies" and "misdeeds" against the Dalit icon.
Opposition MPs, led by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, staged protests both inside and outside Parliament, displaying posters of Ambedkar.
The protests called for an apology from Shah for his remarks. Meanwhile, the BJP counterattacked with senior leaders like J.P. Nadda and Kiren Rijiju defending Shah and accusing Congress of disrespecting him.
During his speech in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Shah had remarked: "Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata," ("It has become a fashion now to say ‘Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar.’ Had you taken God's name so many times, you would have attained heaven in seven lifetimes").
In response, Congress and other Opposition parties also raised slogans such as ‘Jai Bhim,’ ‘Sangh ka Vidhan nahi chalega,’ and ‘Amit Shah maafi maango.’
Dr. Ambedkar, as the architect of India's Constitution, is a national symbol of dignity and rights for marginalized communities.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condemned Shah’s remarks, accusing the BJP and RSS of consistently undermining Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.
He argued that the BJP-RSS alliance is opposed to the tricolour, has a history of rejecting the Ashoka Chakra, and aims to replace India’s Constitution with Manusmriti.
In defence of Shah, Prime Minister Modi took to social media, claiming Shah had exposed Congress’ "dark history" of belittling Dr. Ambedkar and neglecting SC/ST communities.
In a series of posts on X, Modi lashed out at the Congress for allegedly belittling Ambedkar and suggested that the people are well aware of the truth.
“If the Congress and its rotten ecosystem think their malicious lies can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insult towards Dr. Ambedkar, they are gravely mistaken! The people of India have seen time and again how one Party, led by one dynasty, has indulged in every possible dirty trick to obliterate the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar and humiliate the SC/ST communities,” Modi wrote.
Modi claimed that the Opposition's protests were a reaction to the facts Shah had laid out.
“They are clearly stung and stunned by the facts he presented, which is why they are now indulging in theatrics! Sadly, for them, people know the truth!” he stated.
He added that the BJP-led government has worked diligently over the last decade to fulfill Dr. Ambedkar's vision for India.
“It is due to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar that we are what we are! Our Government has worked tirelessly to fulfil the vision of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar over the last decade. Take any sector - be it removing 25 crore people from poverty, strengthening the SC/ST Act, our Government’s flagship programmes like Swachh Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ujjwala Yojana and more, each of them has touched the lives of the poor and marginalised.,” PM Modi wrote further.
