Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Sunday (August 18) accused the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) of “poaching” MLAs and engeering "divisive politics" amid growing speculation about Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) senior leader Champai Soren joining the safffron party.

Soren’s statement came just hours after former Jharkhand chief minister Champai Soren arrived in Delhi. Speaking at a government event in Jharkhand’s Godda district, Hemant Soren accused the BJP of bringing individuals from Gujarat, Assam, and Maharashtra to “spread poison among the tribals, Dalits, backward classes and minorities and make them fight with each other,” news agency PTI reported.

“Forget about society, these people work to break families and parties. They poach MLAs. Money is such a thing that it doesn’t take long for politicians to move here and there,” he added.

Hemant Soren also alleged that while the assembly elections in Jharkhand are due this year, the election schedule would be “decided by the opposition party in the state, not by the Election Commission.”

“It seems the Election Commission is no longer a constitutional institution, as it has been occupied by BJP people. I challenge them (BJP) that if the assembly elections are held today, they will be wiped out from Jharkhand tomorrow,” Jharkhand CM said.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Champai Soren left for Delhi amid speculation that he might join the BJP. The senior JMM leader indicated he was considering three options: retiring, starting a new party, or joining another party.

In a post on X, Champai Soren claimed that on July 3, shortly after Hemant Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court and released from prison, all his scheduled programs were cancelled without explanation.

“When I asked about the reasons for cancellation, I was told that there is a meeting of party legislators on July 3 and I cannot attend any government programmes till then,” he wrote.

“When the party’s central executive meeting has not been held for years, and one-sided orders are passed, then whom should I go to and tell my problems? I am counted among the senior members in this party, the rest are juniors, and the supremo who is senior to me is no longer active in politics due to health, then what option did I have? If he had been active, perhaps the situation would have been different,” he further said.

The 67-year-old Champai Soren, who took office as Chief Minister on February 2, just before Hemant Soren's arrest, was compelled to vacate the post on July 3. Hemant Soren, who had been jailed in connection with an alleged corruption case, resumed the position after being released on bail.
