The controversial Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was officially implemented in Uttarakhand on Monday (January 27), marking the fulfilment of a key promise made by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami during the 2022 assembly election campaign.
On October 18 last year, the final draft of the rules and regulations for the UCC was submitted to Uttarakhand Chief Minister. The draft was prepared by a nine-member expert panel led by former state chief secretary Shatrughna Singh.
Unveiling the UCC notification, Dhami also released its rules and launched an online portal to facilitate its implementation.
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we made a commitment to the people of the state about bringing the UCC in the run-up to the 2022 assembly elections. We took it up on priority after forming the government. The UCC was drafted and an Act on it was brought. We are now going to fulfil that commitment fully and formally on Monday," Deccan Herald quoted Dhami as saying on Sunday.
He further said that the implementation aligns with the Prime Minister's vision of fostering a harmonious and inclusive India.
"It will be in keeping with the prime minister's vision of creating a harmonious India where there is no discrimination against any religion, gender, caste or community," he added.
