President Droupadi Murmu has appointed six new governors and reshuffled three others, according to a late-night press release from Rashtrpati Bhavan on Saturday (July 27).
The Rashtrapati Bhavan communique noted that these appointments will take effect from the dates the new appointees assume their respective positions.
Murmu has appointed Jishnu Dev Varma as the Governor of Telangana, Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde as the Governor of Rajasthan, Om Prakash Mathur as the Governor of Sikkim, Santosh Kumar Gangwar as the Governor of Jharkhand, Ramen Deka as the Governor of Chhattisgarh, and C.H. Vijayashankar as the Governor of Meghalaya.
Jharkhand Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, who was also serving as the Governor of Telangana, has been reassigned to Maharashtra. Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has been moved to Punjab and will also serve as the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Sikkim Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been transferred to Assam, where he will additionally assume the charge of Manipur.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan press release also announced the appointment of K. Kailashnathan, a 1979 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Gujarat cadre, as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
The President accepted the resignation of Banwarilal, the outgoing Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Additionally, the Governors of Rajasthan and Manipur, Kalraj Misra and Anusuya Uikey respectively, were relieved of their duties. Meghalaya Governor Fagu Chauhan was also removed to make way for former Karnataka Minister C.H. Vijayashankar. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan has completed his term.
Former Maharashtra Speaker Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde will replace Kalraj Misra as the Governor of Rajasthan, while senior Rajasthan BJP leader Om Prakash Mathur will assume the role of Governor of Sikkim.
