With preparations underway for two major international gatherings in the national capital, civic authorities have initiated a coordinated exercise to relocate homeless persons from prominent public spaces to designated shelter homes.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) recently directed multiple agencies to begin shifting people living on pavements and roadside locations ahead of the upcoming summits, according to news agency PTI.

The civic body issued instructions on May 4 to agencies including the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), Delhi Police and the Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out the relocation exercise.

Officials said the move is linked to arrangements for the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-IV) 2026 and the first International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA) Summit, both scheduled to take place at Bharat Mandapam between May 28 and June 1.

According to a letter issued by the deputy commissioner of MCD’s Central Zone, joint field inspections identified homeless persons “temporarily residing or congregating” on footpaths, central verges and beneath flyovers along major arterial roads. Many of these locations, the letter noted, fall within the jurisdiction of the PWD.

Parallel to the relocation drive, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday (May 11) launched a special ‘Seva and Rescue Campaign’ aimed at assisting homeless, sick and destitute individuals across the city, reported The Tribune

The five-day initiative, running until May 15, covers all 13 districts of Delhi and focuses on providing shelter, medical treatment and rehabilitation.

As part of the campaign, the chief minister flagged off 19 specially equipped ambulances and rescue vehicles along with support vans tasked with identifying and transporting vulnerable persons from roadsides, pavements, railway stations and bus stands to shelter facilities.

“Homeless and sick people in the city will be rescued and brought to the ashram, where they will be treated and cared for,” said CM Gupta.

Officials said the combined measures are intended to improve welfare outreach while ensuring preparedness and orderly arrangements across the capital during the forthcoming international summits.
