Soon after being sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren announced his government’s decision to pursue legal action to recover coal dues amounting to Rs 1.36 lakh crore from the Centre.
After the first cabinet meeting of his new tenure, Soren spoke to the media. Despite referring to the cabinet meeting in his statement, no other ministers were sworn in on the day.
“Legal action will be initiated to reclaim the Rs 1.36 lakh crore owed to the state by the Centre,” PTI quoted him as saying.
The announcement followed just 25 days after Soren had publicly appealed to the Centre to clear the pending coal dues.
Soren’s first official engagement after re-election was a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Tuesday, where he discussed state matters and extended an invitation to the PM to attend his swearing-in ceremony.
Earlier, on November 2, Soren had taken to social media platform X to urge the Centre to settle the dues.
“The PM and the home minister are coming to Jharkhand. I once again request them with folded hands to clear the outstanding (coal dues) of Rs 1.36 lakh crore to Jharkhandis. This amount is crucial for Jharkhand.” he posted, sharing a letter addressed to the Prime Minister.
Soren also appealed to BJP MPs from the state to assist in securing the funds. He stressed that the coal dues owed by central PSUs, including Coal India, are the state’s rightful entitlement.
He argued that the Centre’s delay in releasing the funds is causing "irreparable harm" to Jharkhand’s development and delaying critical socio-economic initiatives.
The Chief Minister’s stance is bolstered by a recent Supreme Court ruling by a nine-judge bench, which upheld the state’s authority to collect mining and royalty dues.
