Former Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla has been appointed as the Governor of Manipur, according to an official communication from the President's Secretariat on Tuesday (December 24).
Bhalla steps into the role during a critical period for the state, which has been grappling with ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023. His appointment follows the interim tenure of Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who had been holding additional charge of Manipur since July.
Bhalla, who played a key role in the enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 during his tenure as Home Secretary, replaces Acharya in this challenging assignment.
In another significant development, Odisha Governor Raghubar Das has tendered his resignation, which has been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu. Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati has been appointed to succeed him in Odisha.
Meanwhile, retired General and former Union Minister Vijay Kumar Singh will take over as the Governor of Mizoram. Singh has previously served two terms as a Member of Parliament from Ghaziabad.
Additionally, Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has been named the new Governor of Kerala. Arif Mohammed Khan, who has had a tenure marked by frequent confrontations with the Left Front government in Kerala, will now serve as the Governor of Bihar.
The reshuffle reflects a broad reorganization of gubernatorial appointments, with all changes to take effect once the appointees formally assume their respective offices.
