The Enforcement Directorate conducted searches on Friday (January 10) across multiple states, including Bihar, targeting premises linked to an Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA, as part of an investigation into money laundering related to alleged funds embezzlement at a state cooperative bank, according to official sources.

Approximately 18 locations in Bihar, Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi are being searched, news agency PTI reported, citing its sources.

These searches include premises associated with RJD MLA and former Bihar minister Alok Kumar Mehta (58), who serves as the promoter of the Bihar-based Vaishali Shahri Vikas (VSV) Cooperative Bank, along with several other related entities, the sources added.

The money laundering probe is linked to multiple FIRs filed by state police against the bank and its office-bearers for alleged embezzlement of approximately Rs 85 crore, they said.

The RBI had previously conducted a verification of the bank, uncovering the diversion of funds, according to the sources.

Mehta, an MLA representing the Ujiarpur constituency in Bihar, is a senior politician with the Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) led by Lalu Prasad Yadav. He has previously served as the minister for revenue and land reforms in the state.

No immediate statement was available from Mehta or his party regarding the matter.
