Eight months after its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed on August 26 in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district.

The 35-foot statue, located at Rajkot Fort in Malvan, fell on the afternoon of August 26, The Hindu reported.

Unveiled on December 4 of the previous year during Navy Day celebrations at the fort, the statue was presented by PM Modi, Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde, and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The collapse has prompted criticism from opposition leaders, who have accused both the Modi-led NDA government and the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra of corruption.

Opposition leaders have pressed that while the forts built by Shivaji Maharaj have withstood the test of time, the recently unveiled statue has crumbled.

Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar condemned the incident, suggesting that funds may have been misappropriated in the statue's construction.

NCP working president and Baramati MP Supriya Sule expressed outrage, calling the statue’s collapse within a year a disgrace and an insult to Shivaji Maharaj. She criticized the quality of the construction and urged for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged substandard work and related issues.

“However, the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj erected at Rajkot Fort in Malvan, collapsed within a year, which is an insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4, 2023. The collapse of the statue within a year clearly indicates that the work was of inferior quality. This situation represents a betrayal of both the Prime Minister and the public. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a thorough investigation into the reasons behind the substandard work and other related issues,” Supriya Sule said, reported The Hindu.
