The Centre has initiated the process of relocating residents from three slum clusters situated near the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi, with rehabilitation notices being issued on Thursday, The Indian Express reported.
Residents of Bhai Ram Camp, Masjid Camp and DID Camp, located on Race Course Road, have been directed to vacate their dwellings by March 6 and shift to flats allotted to them at the DUSIB Colony in Savda Ghevra.
According to a notice issued by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to one of the residents, failure to comply could invite legal action.
The notice states that the three jhuggi jhopri clusters stand on government land managed by the L&DO. The newspaper reported that 717 households have been allotted alternative accommodation at Savda Ghevra, around 45 kilometres from the present location.
The Prime Minister’s Residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg lies a few kilometres from the clusters. Although the New Delhi Municipal Council renamed Race Course Road as Lok Kalyan Marg in 2016, official L&DO records continue to reflect the earlier address.
As per the notice, a joint survey was carried out in January 2024 by the L&DO and the Delhi Development Authority to determine the eligibility of residents for rehabilitation under the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board’s policy. Following this assessment, it was decided that the eligible families would be relocated to the DUSIB Colony in Savda Ghevra.
A rehabilitation notice had earlier been served to residents on October 29, 2025, prompting them to approach the Delhi High Court in November.
In an order dated November 13, 2025, the court sought the government’s response and observed: “In the meantime, the petitioners shall not be evicted without adhering to the procedural safeguards…”.
During the subsequent hearing on January 13, the government requested an additional four weeks to file its reply.
The court listed the matter for May 13 and directed that the interim protection granted on November 13 would continue until the next date of hearing.
