The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday (August 16) detained Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for questioning regarding the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor. According to CBI sources, Ghosh has been taken to the CGO complex in Salt Lake for interrogation.

Ghosh was the one who initially proposed the 'suicide' theory when the incident first came to light. He had claimed that the doctor's death was not a murder but rather a suicide.

Due to concerns over his leadership and handling of the case, the Calcutta high court has directed Ghosh to take a leave of absence. Additionally, the former superintendent of the hospital, Sanjiv Vashishth, and the head of the chest department, Arunabha Dutta Chowdhury, have also been summoned for questioning on Friday.

Ghosh had sought protection from the Calcutta high court, alleging that his life is in danger. In response, the court has ordered the State to provide police protection for him.

On August 12, Sandip Ghosh resigned in response to the backlash over the brutal rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor. However, rather than accepting his resignation, the TMC-led West Bengal government transferred him to serve as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
