As of November 20, 2024, a total of 54.03 crore accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), with 11.30 crore of these accounts classified as inoperative, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (December 10).
These inoperative accounts collectively hold a balance of Rs 14,750 crore.
In a written reply, Chaudhary highlighted a decline in the percentage of inoperative accounts in public sector banks (PSBs) from 39.62% in March 2017 to 20.91% in November 2024.
As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, savings and current accounts are considered inoperative or dormant if no customer-initiated transactions occur for over two years.
The government has directed banks to reduce the number of inoperative accounts and streamline their activation process by leveraging mobile and internet banking, Video Customer Identification Processes (VCIP), and non-home branches for hassle-free KYC updates.
Data from the Ministry of Finance shows Uttar Pradesh leading across all parameters under the PMJDY scheme.
