A report published by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) on Tuesday (June 3) has revealed that at 22% of the winning candidates in the just concluded Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections have criminal cases, which marks an increase from 17% in 2019.

According to the report, 59 winning candidates (out of 60), declared after vote counting on June 2, were examined for criminal background, financial aspect among other things. The report says that the ADR could not analyse one candidate due to unavailability of his clear and complete affidavit on the ECI website.

Report says that out of the 59 winning candidates, 13 (22%) have declared criminal cases against themselves. 

In addition to that,12 new legislators (20%) have declared serious criminal cases, which is up from 8 out of 60 (13%) in 2019.

Among the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) victorious MLAs, 9 out of 45 (20%) have criminal cases with 8 legislators (18%) facing serious charges.

The National People’s Party (NPP) has 20% (1 out of 5) of its winning candidates declaring serious criminal cases. The NCP has 67% (2 out of 3) of its winners with criminal cases.

The Indian National Congress (INC) has one winning candidate, who has declared both criminal and serious criminal cases.

The ADR report also throws a light on the rise in the number of crorepati candidates in Arunachal Assembly this time.

The report says 57 new legislators out of 59 (97%) are crorepatis, which is up from 93% in 2019, when there were 56 crorepati legislators out of the 60-member Assembly.

BJP heads the list having 43 crorepatis out of their 45 (96%) winning legislators. Rest of the parties like NPP, NCP, People’s Party of Arunachal, Congress, and independent new MLAs have all declared themselves as crorepati candidates.

Party-wise, the average assets per winning candidate stands at Rs 25.83 crore for BJP, Rs 17.45 crore for NPP, Rs 74.13 crore for NCP, Rs 10.32 crore for the People’s Party of Arunachal, Rs 41.96 crore for Congress, and Rs 6.45 crore for independent candidates, the report shows.
