During his first visit to Manipur after the recent outbreak of violence in the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his address beyond India’s borders to reach out to Nepal amid its ongoing political turmoil.
Speaking from Imphal on Saturday (September 13), Modi conveyed his support and congratulations to Sushila Karki, who has taken charge as Nepal’s first woman interim Prime Minister following the fall of the K P Sharma Oli government.
“From the land of Manipur, I also want to speak to my friends in Nepal,” The Indian Express quoted Modi as saying.
“Nepal is India’s close friend. We share history and faith, and we move forward together. On behalf of 140 crore Indians, I congratulate Sushila ji (Karki) on taking charge of the interim government. I am confident she will strengthen the road to peace, stability and prosperity in Nepal,” he added.
On Friday night, Karki, aged 73 and a former Supreme Court Chief Justice, was sworn in as interim Prime Minister by President Ramchandra Paudel, who also dissolved the House of Representatives.
Modi further hailed Karki’s appointment as a significant step toward “women empowerment,” stating, “Her becoming Nepal’s first woman prime minister is a proud example of women’s empowerment.”
The appointment of Sushila Karki marked the end of a political vacuum in Nepal that followed violent protests over corruption, which led to the fall of the Oli government earlier in the week.
In addition to congratulating Karki, Modi praised the youth of Nepal for their civic activism during the crisis.
“Over the past few days, young men and women of Nepal have been cleaning and painting the streets with great dedication. Their positive thinking and constructive work are inspiring, a clear signal of a new dawn in Nepal. I wish the people of Nepal a bright future,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Modi posted a congratulatory message on his X handle, stating: “I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”
The leadership change in Nepal followed nearly a week of nationwide unrest sparked by a controversial social media ban, which fueled simmering anti-corruption protests that ultimately forced the Oli government’s fall.
Sushila Karki’s appointment came after an unprecedented online vote held on Discord, backed by Gen Z protesters, placing her at the forefront of a crucial challenge: restoring order, steering the nation toward elections, and charting a development-focused path for Nepal.
