BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut has struck a markedly different tone on Gen Z, describing India’s young population as a major national asset days after sharply criticising young protesters and referring to some women among them as “Generation Gutter”.
In an interaction with news agency PTI on Friday (August 7), Ranaut praised the younger generation for embracing Indian culture and said young people were increasingly representing the country’s cultural identity.
“Gen Z is the strength of our country and, in a way, a great asset to our nation. We are very happy that our young people are increasingly emerging as ambassadors of our culture and its identity.”
Ranaut, who represents Mandi in Himachal Pradesh in the Lok Sabha, also referred to recent comments by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on the younger generation and said she welcomed the growing engagement of youth with cultural issues.
"We have also had the opportunity to listen to Mohan Bhagwat ji, whom we hold in the highest regard, and benefit from his wisdom and experience. It is a matter of great happiness that the country's youth are connecting with us and embracing our cultural identity," the BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh added.
The comments come days after Ranaut had taken a sharply critical view of student protests at Jantar Mantar and videos circulating from the demonstrations. Her earlier remarks had triggered a debate over her description of young protesters and the language used by some of them against political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a series of videos, Ranaut had expressed strong disapproval of the protesters' conduct.
"Never in my life I have seen so much ugliness in one place, these reels from GenZ protests are puke inducing, the way they speak and the kind of language they are using, never in my life I have seen everything in each and every frame so jarring and so crass all at ones, ewwww who is birthing and raising them?" Kangana had said.
She also said, "Here is a new generation of so-called westernised Indian women. I call them generation gutter."
Ranaut subsequently reacted to videos linked to NEET-related protests, saying they had left her feeling that she needed “some healing” and a “digital detox”.
She wrote: “You call yourself cockroaches and look/behave like them as well... there is no paradox or juxtaposition there, just simply subjecting the world to your filth, garbage and ugliness. I am scarred from these reels, need some healing, digital detox,” the actor had said.
Her latest remarks therefore represent a significant shift in tone, with the BJP MP now presenting Gen Z as a source of strength and as potential ambassadors of Indian culture and identity.
