On the first death anniversary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) stalwart Sitaram Yechury, tributes poured in from across continents, with commemorative events held in London and Visakhapatnam to honour his lifelong dedication to secular, democratic, and pro-people politics.

In London, the Students Federation of India (SFI) announced the launch of the First Annual Sitaram Yechury Lecture in memory of the veteran leader.

The inaugural lecture, held on Friday (September 12) , focused on the topic “India and the World: The Right-Wing Assault Against Education” and was broadcast virtually via Zoom.

Distinguished speakers included Dr. Bhabani Shankar Nayak, Professor in the Department of Business Management at London Metropolitan University, and Dr. Rahul Rao, Reader in International Political Thought at the University of St. Andrews.

The organizers described the lecture series as an effort to highlight Yechury’s role as an intellectual and a staunch defender of secular and democratic values.

SFI UK said in a statement, “The idea is to foster dialogue on how right-wing ideologies undermine education by curbing critical thinking and replacing it with propaganda-driven narratives.”

In addition to the lecture, a memorial rally is planned in St James's Park, London, on September 13.

Meanwhile, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the CPI(M) paid tribute to Yechury by inaugurating a building named ‘Sitaram Yechury Bhavan’ at Pitapuram Colony in Maddilapalem.

CPI(M) All India General Secretary M A Baby, who inaugurated the building on Thursday, recalled his four-decade-long association with Yechury, which began during the SFI conference in Patna in 1979.

Baby said, “Yechuri has carried forward the ideals and path shown by veteran communist leaders like Jyoti Basu and Harkishan Singh Surjit.”

He emphasized that communists must continue to fight for workers’ rights and against caste oppression.

CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh state secretary V Srinivasa Rao added that the building named after Yechury will be developed as a platform to fight against the oppression of the poor, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
