Devendra Fadnavis is set to take the oath as Maharashtra's Chief Minister tomorrow at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, marking the start of his third term in office.

The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leadership officially chose Fadnavis for the position today, putting an end to the prolonged uncertainty over the state's top post.

Following the announcement, his name was presented to the newly elected legislators, and their approval finalized his selection.

With his position confirmed, Fadnavis is scheduled to meet Eknath Shinde at 2 PM at Varsha bungalow, with NCP leader Ajit Pawar also attending. The meeting will focus on the next steps, including the allocation of cabinet portfolios and finalizing the list of leaders who will take the oath.

In the recently concluded state assembly elections, the Mahayuti alliance won 230 of the 288 seats. The BJP secured 132 seats, Shiv Sena got 57, and the NCP won 41.

Despite reports of discontent from caretaker CM Eknath Shinde, who had reportedly retreated to his village in Satara district, he later clarified that the visit was for rest following a strenuous election campaign.

As Azad Maidan prepares for the grand oath ceremony, two weeks after the BJP-led Mahayuti’s decisive victory, Fadnavis, along with Shinde and Pawar, is expected to meet Governor CP Radhakrishnan today to formally stake the claim to form the government.
At the BJP legislators' meeting, Fadnavis expressed his gratitude for being named leader of the legislature party, acknowledging the support of the BJP’s 132 MLAs.

He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his backing and stated that the BJP's "double engine" government would bring progress to Maharashtra. Fadnavis credited the Mahayuti's victory to the Prime Minister's "ek hain to safe hain" slogan.

The BJP's core committee's selection of Fadnavis marks the conclusion of 11 days of suspense regarding the Chief Minister position. After the election results, in which the Mahayuti secured 230 seats, Shiv Sena leaders argued that Shinde, having led the alliance into the polls, should remain as Chief Minister.

However, the BJP made it clear that it would claim the top post, having won 132 of the 148 seats it contested. Eventually, Shinde publicly stated he would not oppose government formation and would accept any decision made by Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Chief Minister role.

Though Shinde's statement signalled his acceptance, there was continued posturing by Shiv Sena leaders, emphasizing the importance of recognizing Shinde’s role in the Mahayuti's victory.

Despite his public stance, Shinde's bargaining power was limited, as the BJP now only needs one of its allies to secure the majority, with the NCP reportedly pledged to support the government formation.
