Yechury Hits Out At Rahul's Remark On Kerala CM; Terms It 'Unforfunate'

Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury has slammed the Congress for its demand for the arrest of Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, by calling it unfortunate.

The Marxist leader told media persons in Alappuzha in Kerala on Saturday (April 20) that the Congress action needs to be condemned strongly. “Nobody is asking for the arrest of a member of the same India block who is the chief minister of the state. Instead, the Congress should demand the release of the chief minister of Delhi and the former CM of Jharkhand who are in jail.

Responding to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Kannur and Palakkad on April 18, wherein he asked as to why Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has not been questioned or arrested by the Central probe agencies despite multiple corruption charges are being levelled against him, Yechuri said targeting the Chief Minister is inappropriate and most unfortunate.

“The Kerala Chief Minister was the first one to condemn Rahul Gandhi’s suspension from Parliament. We did not go by these sorts of politics they are going by. What is the meaning of saying why the Kerala Chief Minister is being spared when Delhi and Jharkhand Chief Ministers have been arrested? The United Democratic Front (UDF) can attack the policies and positions of the LDF but targeting the Chief Minister is most unfortunate,” Yechuri said as quoted by The Statesman.

The CPI(M) head questioned the intension of the UDF. “Is their target to defeat the BJP or the LDF? In Kerala, a vote for the UDF is a vote for the BJP. Strangely, the Congress is demanding the arrest of the most consistent and most sincere opponent of Hindutva.

Earlier the Kerala CM had hit back to Rahul Gandhi’s remark by saying that he and other Left leaders cannot be intimidated by jail, as Rahul grandmother (Indra Gandhi) had jailed them for one-and-a-half years (during the emergency).

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat at a meet in Kochi on Friday, termed Rahul Gandhi’s statement shocking and added that he was strengthening the cause of the BJP by demanding the arrest of the foremost Opposition leader who was fighting the BJP and the Union government on all issues.
