The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has announced a list of 22 candidates for the Lok Sabha election in Bihar. The list includes names of party founder Lalu Prasad Yadav's two daughters Rohini Acharya and Misa Bharti. Rohini is going to make her political debut in the electoral arena in these elections.
The party has fielded eight Yadav candidates and two Muslims while 12 nominees belong to the Other Backward Classes. Three candidates each from the Scheduled Castes and Extremely Backward Classes EBCs have also made the cut apart from two upper caste candidates.
RJD contesting 23 of the state’s 40 Lok Sabha seats as a part of the Mahagathbandhan, has not announced a nominee for Siwan, as the choice is open between former Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary and Hina Sahab, widow of former MP Mohammed Shahbuddin.
Vijayakumar Shukla alias Munna, accused in the IAS officer G Krishnaiah murder case, has been nominated from Vaishali. Adhvesh Mandal's wife Bima Bharti, who joined RJD last month, has been nominated from the Purnia seat.
Gangster Ashok Mahto's wife Anita Kumari has been nominated from Munger. Ashoke was released in 2023 after 17 years of imprisonment.
Bihar's Mahagathbandhan announced their seat compromise in the Lok Sabha elections last month. The RJD initially was to contest 26 out of 40 seats in Bihar but following a deal, gave three from its quota to Mukesh Sahni’s Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP). 9 seats have been left for Congress. Besides, CPI(ML) will contest 3 seats and one each will be contested by CPI(M) and CPI.
While RJD could not win even a single seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress won only one seat. The BJP-JDU-LJP alliance won 39 of the total 40 seats in Bihar.
Bihar votes in all seven phases of the elections, from April 19 to June 1.
