The Supreme Court on Wednesday (May 29) refuse to hear Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea seeking a 7-day extension of his interim bail citing certain medical reasons, in a corruption case linked to the Delhi liquor policy.

The apex court last month granted interim bail to Mr Kejriwal to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections and had asked him to surrender on June 2, a day after the last leg of polling.

The court refusal to hear the petition implicates that Arvind Kejriwal is set to surrender before the Tihar jail authorities on June 2.

The court’s denial to grant bail extension to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo is based on the grounds that since Kejriwal was given the liberty to move the trial court for regular bail, the plea submitted in Supreme Court will not be maintainable.

Additionally, it was pointed out that since the judgment on the challenge to the arrest is already reserved, the present extension application has no correlation to the main petition.

The bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta on May 10 allowed interim release of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was in judicial custody in the Delhi liquor policy case, till June 1. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in March in a money laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

Reacting to the court’s judgement, the AAP convener told PTI, "I am ready to go back to jail again on June 2. And I am proud that I am going to jail to save my country."

He added, “They (BJP) are saying that Kejriwal did corruption; people are saying if Kejriwal is corrupt, then no one in this world is honest. They have no evidence; they claimed a scam of Rs 100 crore, and raided 500 places, but did not recover a single penny. They have arrested me because the work done by Kejriwal cannot be done by Modi ji... I gave free electricity to people in Delhi and Punjab, Modi ji cannot do it. I built excellent government schools for children, Modi ji cannot do it,” said Kejriwal.
