Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers from the Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency on Friday (April 3). He was accompanied by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
This marks an end to the weeks of suspense and uncertainty, over the announcement of Congress candidates in Gandhi bastions seats of Amethi and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh.
Amethi seat, from where Rahul Gandhi lost to Union minister Smriti Irani in 2019, will be contested by longtime loyalist of the Gandhi family, Kishori Lal Sharma.
Earlier The Crossbill has reported that Amethi Unit of Congress wanted Rahul Gandhi to contest from the high-profile seat. The Congress workers staged a sit-in dharna outside their party office in Amethi, couple of days ago and raised slogans of "Amethi mange Gandhi parivar (Amethi demands the Gandhi family)."
Raebareli seat was held by Sonia Gandhi for two decades, however, it was vacated when Sonia Gandhi moved to Rajya Sabha.
Rahul Gandhi’s sister and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is not contesting in the Lok Sabha Polls this time around.
The announcement came on the last day of filing nominations for the two seats, which go to polls on May 20.
