Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his comment that the world learned about Mahatma Gandhi only after the release of the 1982 film Gandhi.
Gandhi said, “Only a student of Entire Political Science (referring to the subject in which PM Modi apparently earned his degree) would have felt the need to see a film to know about Mahatma Gandhi,” Gandhi wrote in Hindi in an X post.
In an interview to ABP News aired on Wednesday, PM Modi claimed that nobody had heard of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi outside India before a film about his life was made, referring to director Richard Attenborough’s 1982 biopic.
“Mahatma Gandhi was a noble soul of the world. Was it not our responsibility that in these 75 years, people in the world know about Gandhi? No one knew about Gandhi. When the Gandhi film was made, for the first time there was curiosity in the world about him,” he told ABP news.
Gandhi, the biographical movie based on the journey of the Father of the nation, the was released in 1982. Richard Attenborough’s movie spans 56 out of Gandhi's 79 years.
Modi’s comments kicked up a political row and a widespread criticism.
In another video post on X, Rahul Gandhi said, “People whose world views are shaped up in shakhas (RSS branches), will not be able to understand Gandhi ji. They can understand (Nathuram) Godse and adopt the path shown by Godse. Gandhi ji was an inspiration for the entire world. Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein… they all got inspired by Gandhi,”

सिर्फ ‘एंटायर पॉलिटिकल साइंस’ के छात्र को ही महात्मा गांधी के बारे में जानने के लिये फिल्म देखने की ज़रूरत रही होगी।
