Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday (June 5) submitted his resignation to Governor Raghubar Das, a day after the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) lost the assembly elections at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in simultaneous polls.

Naveen Patnaik's BJD won 51 seats out of 147 assembly seats. The BJP won 78 seats, going past the majority mark of 78, while the Congress won 14 seats. 

The polls result marks an end to twenty-four years long rule of Naveen Patnaik in the state. Patnaik won his seat from Hinjli by a thin margin of 4,636 votes. 

Voting for assembly seats was held in four phases starting from May 13. Out of total of 147 seats, 28 constituencies went to polls in the first phase on May 13. 35 constituencies went to polls on May 20.

Rest two phases went to polls on May 25 (42 constituencies) and June 1 (42 constituencies).

Lok Sabha elections for 21 seats were also held simultaneously in Odisha with BJP sweeping the state by winning 20 out of total 21 seats. The Congress won the remaining seat.
