Union minister and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) heavyweight, Smriti Irani is trailing by a huge margin in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi parliamentary seat to the Congress candidate and Gandhi family loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma, by over 77,000 votes.
Rahul Gandhi did not contest from Amethi in the current Lok Sabha elections. According to the latest trend on Election Commission of India’s website, Kishori Lal Sharma has got 2 lakh 69 thousand votes, while Smriti Irani has got 1 lakh 94 thousand votes.
In the 18th Lok Sabha elections, instead of fighting from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi decided to fight from Rae Bareli, a seat held by Sonia Gandhi for two decades, before she vacated it, for moving to Rajya Sabha.
As of now, Gandhi is ahead by 2 lakh 33 thousand votes in Rae Bareli. He has garnered 4 lakh 22 thousand votes. His nearest candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh of BJP has got 1 lakh 88 thousand. Rahul Gandhi is also leading by over 3 lakh votes in his home constituency Wayanad in Kerala.
Priyanka Gandhi did not contest in the Lok Sabha polls this time around; however, she had continuously campaigned in Amethi on behalf of KL Sharma.
