In the major show of strength ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc assembled at Delhi's historic Ramlila Maidan for their ‘Loktantra Bachao’ (save democracy) rally on Sunday.
There was some confusion as Aam Admi Party (AAP) leaders claimed that the rally was staged in protest against the arrest of sitting Chief Minister of New Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal. The Congress leaders however denied the claims and said that the purpose of the rally is not ‘person-specific’.
Almost all top leaders from the INDIA bloc attended the rally expected to attend, including Arvind Kejriwal's wife. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Ganghi, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Sharad Pawar, leader of the opposition in Bihar legislative assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, were some of the leaders present at the Maharally.
With thousands in attendance, giant LED screens were installed so everyone could get a glimpse of the event. INDIA bloc leaders urged the Election Commission to ensure a level-playing field in the Lok Sabha polls and asserted that despite the BJP creating "undemocratic obstacles", the alliance is committed to fight, win and save the country's democracy.
The leaders also protested against the "misuse" of investigating agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the ruling BJP. The opposition leaders alleged that BJP has been using the central agencies for political interest.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra read out the demands of the opposition alliance. The congress leader announced the oppositions five demands before the upcoming polls:
1. Election Commission of India should ensure level-playing field in the general elections.
2. EC should stop forceful action of Income Tax, CBI and ED against opposition done with the intention of manipulating the elections.
3. Immediate release of Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren.
4. Attempts to strangle the opposition parties financially should be stopped.
5. A Supreme Court-monitored SIT should be formed to probe the BJP's extortion of funds through electoral bonds; and money laundering charges levelled by the BJP against parties and opposition leaders out of revenge.
