The Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) released its Lok Sabha elections 2024 manifesto at AKG Bhavan in the national capital on Thrusday (April 4). The manifesto promises to scrap all “draconian” laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and calls on the people to defeat the BJP and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 18th Parliamentary elections.
The political document was released by CPI(M) secretary Sitaram Yechury along with Polit Bureau members Brinda Karat, Tapan Sen, Prakash Karat and Nilotpal Basu.
The CPI(M) manifesto appeals to voters to increase the strength of Left parties for protecting India’s secular democracy. The manifesto promises addressing issues related to people’s livelihood, implementation of one-third reservations for women, strengthening processes of justice for women victims of crimes and “restoration” of constitutional rights of states.
Among the other notable points, CPI(M) pledges for conducting a caste census and holding elections immediately in Jammu and Kashmir among others. The manifesto states that CPI(M) will “fight for a law against hate speech and crimes, is committed to scrapping” the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.
On the economic front, the party lays emphasis on workers’ rights, food security, taxing the super rich, guarantee of minimum support price to farmers for crops according to the Swaminathan Commission recommendations and protecting India’s economic sovereignty.
The manifesto also calls to scrap the New Education Policy, brought in by the Modi governement, strengthen universal right to education and stop privatization of higher education.
The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases between April 19 and June 1. The results will be declared on June 4.
