Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday (March 24) warned that India’s education system would be "destroyed" if the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) gained complete control over it.
Speaking at a protest organized by student groups affiliated with the INDIA bloc at Jantar Mantar, he asserted that the opposition alliance would never compromise on the country’s education system.
"One organisation wants to destroy the future and the education system of the country. The name of that organisation is the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. If the education system goes into their hands, which is actually happening slowly, this country will be destroyed. No one will get jobs and the country will be finished," news agency PTI quoted Gandhi as saying.
He alleged that the RSS was influencing the appointment of university vice chancellors and warned that soon, state universities would also fall under its control.
"Students organisations must tell students that the vice chancellors of Indian universities are dominated by the RSS. In the coming time, state universities' VCs will be appointed on the recommendation of the RSS. We have to stop this," he urged.
Gandhi also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to address key national issues such as unemployment and inflation. He further accused the government of prioritizing corporate interests over public welfare.
"The prime minister does not speak a word about unemployment, inflation and education system. Their model is to hand over all resources to Adani and Ambani and hand over institutions to the RSS," he said, reported PTI.
Addressing the student protestors, Gandhi called for unity within the INDIA bloc despite ideological differences.
"You are students of the INDIA bloc, there may be some differences in our ideologies and policies but we can never compromise on the education system of the country. We will fight this fight together and push back the RSS," he declared.
Last month, Gandhi participated in a demonstration against the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) draft regulations on university appointments, arguing that they were designed to further the RSS’s ideological agenda.
He accused the organization of attempting to impose a singular historical and cultural narrative on the country through academic institutions.
The INDIA bloc has been vocal in its opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP), arguing that it promotes centralization and ideological bias.
Monday’s protest at Jantar Mantar marked yet another show of resistance against what the opposition calls the "saffronization" of education.
