Durai Vaiko, son of MDMK founder and Lok Sabha MP Vaiko, resigned from his position as the party’s principal secretary on Saturday, citing internal disputes as the reason behind his decision.
The move has brought to light deep-seated tensions within the party’s leadership, news agency PTI reported.
Vaiko announced his son’s resignation on the social media platform X, attributing the step to the actions of a particular individual. A senior party leader said the issue will be discussed during the Administrative Council meeting on Sunday, where the party will decide on the next course of action.
The resignation comes just days after Vaiko had cautioned MDMK’s district units against passing any resolutions prior to the crucial April 20 meeting, where several important matters are expected to be addressed.
Durai alleged that ever since he was appointed headquarters secretary, one person—whom he did not name—has been making persistent accusations against the party and its leadership.
He went on to accuse the same individual of leaking damaging information to the media in an effort to malign Vaiko’s reputation.
Durai charged that the person concerned destroyed the party with such action, adding that the damage done had forced him to step aside in the interest of the party and his father, reported PTI.
Durai confirmed he would attend the Administrative Council meeting on Sunday at the party headquarters ‘Thayagam’ but made it clear he would not take part in future meetings involving major decisions.
“At the same time, I would continue to work for the MDMK as its primary worker,” he stated, affirming his commitment to the people of Tiruchirappalli.
In response to the developments, senior party figures, including MDMK Presidium Chairman Auditor A Arjunaraj, met with General Secretary Vaiko to deliberate on the matter. The issue will be taken up formally at the council meeting, where a “good decision” is expected to be announced, according to a senior leader.
