In a move aimed at easing restrictions and reviving people-to-people exchanges, India has announced the resumption of tourist visas for Bangladeshi citizens beginning June 28.

The announcement was made on Thursday (June 25) by India's newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, during a visit to the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Dhaka, shortly after he formally assumed charge of the diplomatic mission.

“I am happy to announce that we are resuming our normal visa operation. Applications for tourist visas can be submitted from Sunday, 28th of June 2026. We will continue to facilitate medical visas in urgent cases on humanitarian considerations,” the Indian High Commissioner stated.

Trivedi had earlier presented his credentials to Bangladesh President Md Shahabuddin before proceeding directly to inspect visa operations at the IVAC in Jamuna Future Park.

“I called on the Hon’ble President of Bangladesh and presented my credentials today. I am coming straight to the Indian Visa Application Centre to inspect its operations. It is heartening to see such a large footfall of people here at IVAC,” he said.

According to Trivedi, tourist visa services will resume simultaneously at five Indian visa centres located in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Sylhet and Khulna.

“We will further scale up our operations in other cities gradually,” he said.

The decision comes after months of restrictions in bilateral travel. India had suspended several categories of visas for Bangladeshi nationals, including tourist visas, in December last year following tensions triggered by the attack and subsequent death of youth leader Osman Hadi in Dhaka and allegations of attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

New Delhi had indicated in February that services would eventually be restored, while Bangladesh had already resumed tourist and other visa services for Indian citizens earlier this year. The reopening of tourist visas is being seen as an effort to rebuild normalcy in India-Bangladesh relations after a prolonged period of strain.
