India has formally raised concerns with the US Embassy in New Delhi regarding a video that surfaced online showing a young man—purportedly of Indian origin—being restrained by law enforcement officers at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

Despite diplomatic outreach, Indian authorities have yet to receive details about the incident, including the man’s identity, the circumstances under which he was restrained, or his intended travel itinerary, officials said on Tuesday.

According to the news website The Wire, citing its sources, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), along with the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate in New York, is in contact with American authorities to gather more information.

“We continue to follow up on the matter,” an official noted, underscoring the absence of official communication from US authorities thus far.

The incident came to light after Kunal Jain, a user on X  who identifies as an entrepreneur and a US citizen of Indian origin, posted images and videos on Sunday showing a young man pinned to the ground by officials allegedly belonging to the Port Authority Police of New York and New Jersey.

Jain claimed the man, who appeared to speak in Haryanvi-accented Hindi, insisted he was not mentally unwell despite being treated as such by officials at the airport.

Jain further claimed the young man was meant to board the same Newark-to-New Delhi flight as him, but the pilot reportedly intervened after witnessing the situation and refused to let the man board.

The identity of the man remains unknown. While American authorities have not publicly commented, the episode has triggered political responses in India.

Congress MP and party communications chief Jairam Ramesh accused the Modi government of failing to safeguard the dignity of Indian nationals abroad.

Referring to recent remarks by former US President Donald Trump—who claimed to have brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during a brief military standoff—Ramesh said Prime Minister Modi had remained silent both on that claim and on incidents involving Indian citizens overseas.

“The Modi Government is failing to protect the honour of India and Indians. For the first time in history, a US head of state has announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in Washington DC. The US President is continuously claiming credit for maintaining pressure on India. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi has not been able to summon the courage to speak - either on the ceasefire or on the atrocities being perpetrated against Indians in the US Protecting the honour of India and Indians is one of the most important responsibilities of the Prime Minister of India,” he wrote on X.

He called on Modi to confront US leadership over what he described as rising “atrocities” against Indians, particularly students, in the United States.

“We demand that Prime Minister Modi should talk to President Trump and appeal for intervention in the atrocities happening against Indians and the fear that has gripped lakhs of Indian students in America,” he added.

The airport episode coincides with growing unease among international students, many of whom have reported visa revocations under the Trump administration’s policies. A number of affected students, including Indians, are reportedly seeking legal remedies.

In response to the broader issue, the MEA reiterated that while Indian missions are supporting students facing visa difficulties, Indian citizens residing abroad are expected to comply with local laws.
