India abstained from a resolution by the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva on Friday (April 5) that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an implementation of an arms embargo on Israel.

The resolution is one among the four HRC resolutions which were adopted by the Geneva-based Council by 47 members, with a vote of 28 in favour, six against and 13 abstentions.

The resolution demanded “Israel, the occupying Power, end its occupation of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem.”

The resolution also called for all efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

The timing of voting of 4 HRC resolutions (titled Human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the obligation to ensure accountability and justice ) comes at the backdrop of the killings of seven international aid workers in Gaza in Israeli airstrikes and a military strike by Israel on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus.

Along with India, France, Japan, Netherlands, and Romania also abstained from voting, Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, and the US voted against the resolution. However countries like Qatar, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Vietnam and Maldives voted in favour of the resolution.

While India abstained from voting on ceasefire, it did vote in favour of three other resolutions that criticised Israel for human rights violations against Palestinians, Israel’s occupation of Syrian Golan, and called for the Palestinian right to self-determination.
