India abstained from a key vote at the United Nations General Assembly calling for an “immediate, unconditional and permanent” ceasefire in Gaza, as the humanitarian crisis in the region deepens.
The resolution, introduced by Spain, was passed with overwhelming support—149 countries voted in favour, while 12 voted against and 19, including India, abstained.
The non-binding resolution called for a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the opening of all border crossings, and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.
It also pressed for the full implementation of the UN Security Council’s June 2024 resolution, which includes provisions for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, return of the remains of those killed, the exchange of Palestinian prisoners, and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes.
India’s abstention places it alongside countries like Albania, Cameroon, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Malawi, Panama, South Sudan and Togo.
In explaining the decision, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, said the resolution was being voted on amid a worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.
“Our vote today is in continuation of this in the belief that there is no other way to resolve conflicts but through dialogue and diplomacy. A joint effort should be directed towards bringing the two sides closer. For these reasons, we would abstain on this resolution,” Ambassador Harish said, reported PTI.
The resolution adds to growing international pressure on Israel amid mounting civilian casualties and displacement in Gaza.
While India has previously expressed concern over the loss of civilian lives and supported humanitarian efforts, its decision to abstain rather than back the resolution has drawn criticism from some quarters for failing to take a clear stand in favour of a ceasefire.
