The first batch of more than sixty Indian construction workers is ready to go to Israel, within a year of signing an agreement between India and Israel, on facilitating Indian workers in the mid-eastern state.
Israeli ambassador Naor Gilon on Tuesday (April 2) posted photos of an event to send off the first batch of Indian construction workers “under the G2G agreement” on his official X handle. Gilon also praised the officials for their “hard work” for sending of Indian workers, including members of India’s National Skill Development Corporation.
A framework agreement was signed in May 2023, when Israeli foreign minister Eli Cohen’s visited India, which would facilitate 42,000 Indian workers to be brought to Israel, out of which 34,000 would be in the construction industry.
However, the sending of workers come at a time when the Indian embassy in Israel had issued an advisory less than a month back, after a citizen was killed in a Hezbollah rocket strike in northern Israel. All Indian nationals working in Israel, especially those working in or visiting border areas in the north and south were advised to relocate to safe areas within Israel.
According to a Reuters report Hamas had claimed to have killed 70 hostages in response to Israeli aggression on Gaza, which has resulted in 30,000 deaths on the Gaza Strip. Add to that the Israeli forces have subjected the remaining Palestinians to severe food, sanitation and healthcare crises.
India’s pro Israeli stance was on display when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed “solidarity” with Israel after the October 7 attack. However no statement was given on the genocide that followed.
India had also abstained on the first UN General Assembly resolution that called for a humanitarian pause in Israel’s military action.
With mounting International pressure, India gave in and had to move from its position as the Gaza toll climbed higher. India voted in favour of the UNGA resolution that called on Israel to halt its fighting to allow for humanitarian assistance and reiterated its support for the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
