Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has called on the Union government to declare the Wayanad landslide as a national disaster.

While speaking in Lok Sabha on Wednesday (August 7) during Zero Hour, Gandhi said, “There has been a tragedy in Wayanad and I am amazed that they are not allowing us to speak and make a statement,” referring to the constant sloganeering in the treasury benches.

Gandhi then went on with his speech and said, “I visited Wayanad with my sister some days back and saw firsthand the devastation, pain, and suffering resulting from this tragedy. More than 200 people are dead, and many are missing, but the eventual casualty count is expected to be over 400.”

In his speech, Rahul Gandhi praised the collaborative efforts of the Union and Kerala state governments, as well as the contributions of personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Fire Department, and other agencies. He also acknowledged the support from neighbouring states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.

On the issue of declaring Wayanad landslide as a national disaster, Gandhi said, “I urge the Union Government to Provide a comprehensive rehabilitation package, enhance the compensation that people are receiving and declare the Wayanad landslides a national disaster.”

Earlier on Sunday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made a similar appeal, urging the Union government to declare the Wayanad incident a national disaster.

“What happened in Wayanad was a significant disaster at the national level. The efforts of the police who participated in the rescue mission there, are commendable,” Vijayan stated.
