Facing criticism from Opposition parties, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (August 15) accused the CPI(M) and BJP of orchestrating a "coordinated" effort to politicize the rape and murder of the junior doctor.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo also attempted to draw a comparison between the unrest in Kolkata and the student protests in Dhaka, suggesting that there are efforts to "create a Bangladesh here." Banerjee pointed out that she had "no longing for the chair."
Blaming the CPI(M) and BJP for the midnight mob attack at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Banerjee claimed that fake videos created using artificial intelligence (AI) are being spread on social media to mislead the public. She urged people not to fall for these fabricated videos.
Speaking to the media after attending the Independence Day tea party at the Raj Bhawan, Banerjee clarified that the hospital attack on Wednesday night was not perpetrated by the protesting doctors.
She stated, “It was not done by the students (doctors). I don’t blame them. Some outsiders, political people, want to create unrest in Bengal. Bam and Ram (Left and the BJP) joined hands to do this. They had gone there to score brownie points from the protest. They don’t want peace. Those who carried the national flag in the movement were BJP (party workers). Apart from this, DYFI flags were also seen,” The Indian Express quoted her as saying.
Regarding the misuse of AI, Banerjee remarked, “A lot can be done with AI these days. Any face can be placed in any photo or video. Audio can be generated. The same is happening here. I watch a lot of videos. Promoting lies through fake videos has become a business. The police will keep a close eye on them. The Prime Minister also spoke about cyber crime in the NITI Aayog meeting. I agree with him on this.”
