The Communist Party of India (CPI) is set to hold its 25th National Congress in Chandigarh from September 21 to 25, bringing together nearly 900 delegates from across the country for a five-day session at Kisan Bhavan, Sector 35.

The event will begin with a massive rally at Sabzi Mandi Ground, Phase 11, Mohali, where thousands of farmers, workers, employees, agricultural labourers, youth and women are expected to gather.

The rally will be addressed by CPI leaders including general secretary D Raja, national secretary Amarjeet Kaur, Punjab state secretary Bant Singh Brar, trade union leader Nirmal Singh Dhaliwal, former MLA Hardev Arshi, and comrade Jagroop.

The formal inauguration will take place on September 22 at Kisan Bhavan with a flag-hoisting ceremony by professor Jagmohan Singh, nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

The session will be addressed by D Raja and other CPI national leaders, alongside representatives from CPI(M), RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI(ML) Liberation, including M A Baby, Dipankar Bhattacharya, G Devarajan and Manoj Bhattacharya.

Evenings during the Congress will feature cultural programmes, including performances by Doli Guleria, daughter of Punjab’s nightingale Surinder Kaur, her niece Sunaini Sharma, artists from Chhattisgarh, and theatre groups presenting plays on people’s issues.

The proceedings will conclude on September 25 with elections to the Central Control Commission, National Council, National Executive, National Council General Secretary, and the National Secretariat. A special resolution will be passed to mark the birth centenary of former General Secretary A B Bardhan.

CPI leaders said that preparations for both the rally and the Congress have been finalised, with volunteers already in place at the Mohali venue, decorated with flags and banners.

“Party Congress is a platform for introspection for the party and find out the political line to fight the authoritarian and communal forces in the country,” a CPI leader told The Crossbill.

From September 22 to 24, the Congress will deliberate on political and social issues, with discussions focusing on what CPI terms as the Centre’s “authoritarian approach” as well as the flood crisis in Punjab.

Delegates will also take up condolence resolutions, political reports, and organisational matters.

At the Mohali rally, party leaders are expected to step up criticism of the Centre’s “anti-people and divisive policies” while demanding the fulfilment of its promise of two crore jobs for youth. They will also press for adequate flood relief for Punjab and other states recently hit by disasters.
