The Congress party on Thursday (May 29) accused the Modi government of planning a special session of Parliament on June 25-26 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, calling it an attempt to deflect public attention from more pressing national concerns.

Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, criticised the move, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to evade key questions on recent security developments and international interventions.

Ramesh noted that since the night of April 22, when the Pahalgam terror attack occurred, the Congress has consistently demanded an all-party meeting chaired by the Prime Minister to discuss the incident and its aftermath.

“From the night of April 22nd itself, the Indian National Congress has been calling for an all-party meeting on the Pahalgam terror attacks and their fallout - to be chaired the PM himself. That has yet to take place,” he wrote on X.

He further said that on May 10, the Leaders of the Opposition in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had formally requested the Prime Minister to convene a special session of Parliament to adopt a resolution showing the nation’s collective resolve.

“On May 10th, both the LoP in the Lok Sabha and the LoP in the Rajya Sabha wrote to the PM requesting for a special session of Parliament to be convened and to demonstrate the nation’s collective resolve through a resolution. The PM has NOT accepted that suggestion as well,” Ramesh pointed out.

Ramesh claimed that the government is now considering holding a special session on June 25 and 26 to observe the Emergency’s 50th anniversary.

“Now it appears that a special session of Parliament is being considered for June 25-26 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency,” he said.

Accusing Modi of having placed the nation under an undeclared Emergency for 11 years, he concluded by stating, "This will be yet another classic exercise in diversion and distraction from real and more urgent issues by the PM--the man who has placed the nation under an undeclared Emergency for 11 years and the man who refuses to answer why the Pahalgam terrorists are still absconding, why he allowed President Trump to broker a cease fire, and why he gave a clean chit to China publicly on June 19th, 2020?”

The Congress also demanded answers from the Prime Minister on several other matters, including the continued absence of the terrorists behind the Pahalgam attack, the Trump administration’s role in brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and the Prime Minister’s statement on June 19, 2020, which allegedly gave a “clean chit” to China following border tensions.

India launched precision strikes under Operation Sindoor on May 7 in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead. This was followed by attempted strikes on Indian military bases by Pakistan on May 8, 9, and 10. In response, Indian forces retaliated with counter-strikes on multiple Pakistani military sites.

By May 10, both countries agreed to a ceasefire following a reported intervention by the United States. Former US President Donald Trump had claimed that the agreement came after extensive discussions mediated by Washington, though India has yet to officially acknowledge such mediation.

There has been no immediate comment from the government or the BJP on Congress's allegations or the reported dates for the special session.
