In a latest episode of surging violence over the last week in Manipur, two abandoned houses belonging to Meitei were allegedly set ablaze by unknown miscreants in Jiribam district in the early hours of Friday (June 14).
The incident took place, despite the deployment of additional security forces in the Jiribam district to counter the resurgence of violence in the border district of Manipur.
According to the police, the incident occurred at around 3 am on Friday at Bhutangkhal under Borobekra police station. No casualties were reported during the incident.
The commercial activity in the bordering district is already on a standstill after the recovery of the beheaded body of a missing person on June 6, which had triggered to a fresh occurrence of violence.
At least 70 houses, police outposts and a forest office were set ablaze and with around 2000 people were displaced following the June 6 incident. All fingers point to negligence of the state and union governments.
State chief minister Biren Singh in an interview to the Indian Express on June 9, admitted that the “Centre and state are not meeting public expectations.”
Meanwhile, additional security forces have been deployed in the Jiribam district and a close monitoring is underway in the vulnerable areas to prevent further mishaps.
In view of the present situation in Jiribam, the All Jiribam Muslim Welfare Society (AJMWS) issued a statement stating that the recreation and entertainment surrounding the Eid-ul-Adha festival have be restricted.
AJMWS also stated that Eid-ul-adha Namaz will be prayed at the respective Masjids of the locality by restricting the mass gathering.
