A lookout circular (LOC) has been issued against gangster Shariq Satha, alleged to be operating from Dubai, in connection with last year’s violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal.
Police have identified him as the “main conspirator” in the case and accused him of supplying weapons that were used during the clashes, The Indian Express reported.
The incident took place on November 24, when violence broke out near the Shahi Jama Masjid during a court-ordered survey of the 16th-century mosque.
The clashes left four people dead and several others, including policemen, injured. Following the violence, police registered 12 FIRs at different police stations in Sambhal.
Confirming action against the gangster, Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishan Kumar told the newspaper, “During the probe, Satha was found to be the main conspirator in the case. He is accused of supplying weapons. He has been booked on charges of criminal conspiracy in five cases (related to the violence), including four related to murder.”
Investigators said Satha, originally from Deepa Sarai in Sambhal, has been directing his associates from Dubai, where he has reportedly been based since fleeing India in 2020 on a fake passport. Acting on his instructions, his aides allegedly arranged weapons that were later used by protestors during the violence.
“We have arrested three associates of Shariq in connection with the violence case,” said SP Kumar.
According to police, Satha has as many as 54 criminal cases registered against him across Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Uttarakhand, with a majority linked to auto-lifting. More than 100 people have already been arrested for their alleged involvement in the clashes.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the case, and suspicions of foreign links arose after six empty cartridges were recovered from the spot, one of which was found to have been manufactured in Pakistan. It was during this probe that the role of Satha came to light.
Police have since filed chargesheets in 12 cases, with trial proceedings already underway in 10 of them.
