A Zomato food delivery agent was allegedly assaulted by four men in Uttar Pradesh’s capital, Lucknow, on the night of August 20-21, due to his Muslim identity, news website The Wire reported.

In his police complaint, the victim, Mohammad Aslam, alleged that he was assaulted by the residents of a house where he had gone to deliver food late at night. Reportedly he was being subjected to communal slurs, having liquor poured over him, and being held hostage for over an hour in a single-storey house.

According to The Wire, Aslam, who has been working as a delivery agent for two years, received two orders on the night of August 20. One of these orders was destined for a location in the Vineet Khand locality of Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. Upon arriving at the location, Aslam asked the resident customer to come down to the gate to collect the order.

However, Aslam reported that the man on the other end of the phone requested him to come up to the first floor.

“I refused initially because I had another delivery to make. But then he told me that he was eating and couldn’t come down. Out of humanity, I decided to climb up and hand over the parcel to him,” Aslam told The Wire.

Upon reaching the first floor, Aslam reported that one of the men reprimanded him for their earlier phone conversation in which he had initially refused to go upstairs. Aslam also noted that the four men were drinking.

The situation escalated when one of the men reportedly grabbed Aslam by the collar and dragged him inside the house. Aslam alleged that the men then assaulted him and questioned him about his identity.

In his written police complaint, Aslam stated, "They asked me for my name, and because of my Muslim name, they tortured me even more."

The men eventually released Aslam after threatening him and allegedly coercing him into signing a statement claiming that he had overcharged them for the food and misbehaved, and that he would not report the incident.

In the FIR, Aslam also alleged that the men threatened to shoot him, the news websited reported.

Police lodged a criminal case based on Aslam’s complaint and have so far arrested one of the four accused persons.
