One person has been arrested and search operations are ongoing following a communal clash in Tatina village, in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district, that occurred on Saturday (August 24) night. The clash resulted in twelve injuries, including that of a pregnant woman. An FIR has been filed at the Lohia Nagar police station.
According to the police, Sirajuddin Qureshi, 28, from Hapur district, who has been residing with his in-laws in Tatina village for the past three months, was involved in the incident. Around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Qureshi, who was reportedly intoxicated, had a heated argument with Wahid Ahmed, 30, a local resident, over an unspecified issue while returning home, The Indian Express reported.
As both individuals were fighting, local doctor Sitaram, 62, was heading home from his clinic in Tatina village when he attempted to intervene. His attempt to mediate aggravated both combatants, who then allegedly turned on him and attacked, the police informed.
Sensing the escalating situation, local residents quickly moved in to protect the doctor. Meanwhile, approximately a dozen members of Sirajuddin’s family arrived on the scene to assist him. The area swiftly descended into chaos as Hindus and Muslims allegedly began throwing bricks and using sharp weapons against each other. The violent clash resulted in injuries to about a dozen people, including Sonam, 26, who is pregnant. She had reportedly rushed to the scene in an attempt to save her husband, Harish, 34, The Indian Express further reported.
Meanwhile, Dr Sitaram’s grandson Vipul informed Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal leaders about the incident. Soon, 30 to 40 members of the two Hindu outfits rushed to the spot and later staged a dharna at Lohia Nagar police station, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Sanjay Pandey, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Lohia Nagar police station said, “We have arrested Qureshi and raids are being conducted to nab others. The forces from three police stations — Lohia Nagar, Brahmpuri and Lisadi Gate — were requisitioned to quell the trouble. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital while adequate police and personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed in the Tatina village as a precautionary measure.”
