The Madhya Pradesh government has announced plans to introduce the death penalty for individuals involved in the forced religious conversion of girls, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav declared on International Women’s Day (March 8).

Speaking at a government event in Bhopal, Yadav announced that the proposed provision would impose the strictest punishment for religious conversions conducted through coercion or inducement, aligning it with penalties for crimes against minors.

Yadav posted a video from the event on X stating in Hindi: “Madhya Pradesh has implemented the Religious Freedom Act to take strict action against those who engage in forced or induced marriages and religious conversions. Our government will not tolerate any instances of religious conversion or misconduct.”

Later in the evening, the state government issued an official statement, reiterating its stance.

According to a report in The Hindu, the statement read: “Chief Minister Dr. Yadav said that the government will take the strictest steps against those who misbehave with girls, women and daughters. The culprits will be given death penalty. No culprit will be spared under any circumstances.”

During the event, Yadav also highlighted the role of women in security, sharing a photo of his all-women security team and praising their vigilance and dedication.

Additionally, the government disbursed the latest installment of Rs 1,250 each to over 12.7 million beneficiaries under the ‘Ladli Behna Yojana’, a financial assistance scheme aimed at empowering women.

The Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Act, passed on March 8, 2021, was part of the BJP government’s intensified crackdown on forced religious conversions.

The ruling party has frequently invoked the term "love jihad" to describe alleged cases where Muslim men are accused of luring Hindu women into marriage for conversion. Similar anti-conversion laws have been enacted in other BJP-ruled states across the country.
