In yet another attempt to polarize and disrupt the social fabric of the capital, Hindutva elements have targeted meat and fish shops in South Delhi’s CR Park and Govindpuri areas in recent days.

A delegation from the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s South Delhi Local Committee visited both locations on Thrusday and condemned the recent developments.

The controversy began after a video surfaced showing a member of the "saffron brigade" urging fish vendors to shut down their shops, citing the proximity of a nearby temple.

The radical right-wing group's anti-meat campaign reached CR Park's local markets last week, accompanied by threats and warnings.

Demolition of Kalkaji Indra Fish and Chicken Market

In Govindpuri’s Kalkaji Indra Fish and Chicken Market — a hub that has been serving the community for over four decades — authorities carried out a demolition drive on April 7. Officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and Delhi Police reportedly arrived without prior notice and razed the market, citing ownership of the land by PWD and complaints from nearby DDA flat residents.

However, the CPI(M) delegation pointed out that this demolition is in blatant violation of a Delhi High Court order in WP(C) 2414/2016, which clearly states that no shops are to be demolished until a comprehensive survey is completed.

Adding to the controversy, AAP Councillor Ashu Thakur of CR Park has taken to social media to claim credit for the demolition, sparking outrage among local shopkeepers and residents.

In response, the CPI(M) vowed to step up pressure on the MCD and PWD to ensure justice for those affected and confirmed that legal proceedings are already underway.

Meanwhile, in CR Park Market 1, another disturbing incident unfolded when a group of individuals dressed in saffron attempted to forcibly shut down the market’s fish shops. Shopkeepers, however, stood united and successfully resisted the intrusion, refusing to yield to intimidation. A formal complaint has since been submitted to the Market Association regarding the incident.

CPI(M) Condemns Growing Hindutva Aggression

The CPI(M) has strongly condemned the increasing brazenness of Hindutva outfits emboldened under the BJP’s rule in Delhi.

The party accused these groups of weaponizing religious festivals to impose food bans and infringe on people’s dietary rights. It also called out the complicity — or at best, silence — of political figures such as the local AAP councillor in enabling such divisive actions.

The CPI(M) reaffirmed its commitment to resist these communal forces and called for collective resistance against attempts to erode Delhi’s inclusive ethos.

“We must unite to defend the rights of all communities and stand firm against such efforts to divide society,” a member of the visiting delegation said.
