A day after a notice announcing the serving of "beef biryani" for lunch at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) sparked controversy, the police registered an FIR against three individuals, including two students and a chief provost, officials confirmed on Monday (February 10).
The FIR, lodged at the Civil Lines police station, names Mohammad Faiazullah and Mujassim Ahmad, both students, along with F.R. Gauhar, the provost of Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall, where the notice was displayed, news agency PTI reported.
The case has been filed under sections 302 (uttering words with deliberate intent to hurt religious feelings), 270 (public nuisance), and 353 (public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Circle Officer Abhay Pandey stated that the Karni Sena had submitted a memorandum regarding the matter, prompting authorities to take the issue seriously and initiate an investigation.
Karni Sena’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief, Gyanendra Singh, alleged that a message had gone viral on social media about a 'beef party' being organized in Sulaiman Hall involving both students and faculty members.
He claimed that the act had hurt the religious sentiments of Hindu students at AMU and demanded strict action, including the expulsion of those responsible.
In response to the controversy, the AMU administration clarified on Sunday that the notice contained a "typing error" and was not an official communication.
Vibha Sharma, a member of AMU’s public relations department, stated, "The matter was brought to our attention. We found that the notice was regarding the food menu. However, it contained a clear typing error. The notice was immediately withdrawn as it had no official signatures, raising doubts about its authenticity."
She further added that the university had issued a show-cause notice to the two senior students responsible for putting up the notice and emphasized that the administration was taking the issue seriously to ensure strict compliance with university regulations.
