Cow Vigilantes Lynch Two Men to Death in Chhattisgarh Over Suspicion of Cow Smuggling

In yet another attack by cow vigilantes, two men were allegedly lynched to death and one got severely injured in Chhatiisgarh's Raipur, while they were transporting buffaloes, The Times of India reported.

According to TOI, that the two men, who hail from Uttar Pradesh, were identified as Chand Miyan, age 23, and Guddu Khan age 35. They were beaten to death and their bodies were thrown from a bridge onto the river bed. 

The incident took place near temple road Arang. The survivor, identified as 23-year-old Saddam Qureshi succumbed grave injuries and his condition is said to be critical.

Sources told TOI that a group of 15-20 cow vigilantes followed the three truckers from Patewa on Mahasamund-Arang Road, around 70 km from Raipur, on the suspicion of cow smuggling. The attack on the truckers took place after they were stopped on a bridge on the Mahanadi river at around 2-3 am on Friday morning.

The police reached the spot roughly after one hour. An FIR has been registered.

According to the police, the post mortem reports of the two killed men are awaited, while Qureshi’s statement will be recorded to better understand what transpired.

As per another report published in Indian Express, among the two killed, one Chand Miyan hailed from Saharanpur, another Guddu Khan was from Shamli, while the injured Qyresh is Chand’s cousin, who also hails from Saharampur.

A cousin of Qureshi and Chand told Indian Express, that the duo made phone calls back home, when they were assaulted in the early morning hours on Friday. He said that one of the calls by Qureshi went on for 47 minutes, during which cries for help, water and pleading for not to be beaten, could be heard.

He said, “Qureshi was a helper. He called and kept the phone in his pocket. He was screaming that his hand and leg were broken. He was pleading, ‘bhaiya paani pila do ek ghoot. Maro mat bas paani pila do (give me a sip of water, please don’t beat me)’,” he claimed. “We could also hear some men ask him, ‘kahan se laaye ho… chodenge nahi (where did you bring it from… we will not spare you)’,” quoted Indian Express.
