Two Muslim men accused of cow slaughter were beaten and paraded in public by the Ujjain police on Monday (March 3), with an officer seen threatening them with a baton while they were made to chant, “Gai hamari mata hai, police hamare baap hain” (Cow is our mother, police our father).
The incident, which took place following the arrest of Salim and Aqib, has sparked controversy, but no action has been taken against the officers involved.
Following the incident, members of the right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal felicitated the police officers, applauding their actions, The Hindu reported.
According to a report published in The Indian Express, Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma confirmed the arrests and stated that both men were habitual offenders, allegedly involved in over 24 cases.
"The accused were probably paraded as they were taken to the crime spot. I have not seen the video. They are habitual offenders with over 24 criminal cases," he told the newspaper.
Right-Wing Pressure and Police Response
The arrests came after right-wing groups had been pressuring the police to take action against the accused. Following their detention, activists garlanded police officers, including the Ghatiya police station in charge, in celebration.
Officials stated that they had received information about the alleged cow slaughter and subsequently registered a case.
According to police sources, locals had spotted the accused tying a cow and attempted to apprehend them, but they managed to flee under the cover of darkness.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
According to the police, Salim and Aqib, along with another suspect, were seen near Jaithal village on February 16 with an SUV and a tied-up cow. Locals alerted authorities, but the men escaped.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the two accused near Indore on March 3, seizing a vehicle, mobile phones, and alleged cow meat.
The duo has been booked under Sections 4, 6, and 9 of the MP Govansh Vadh Pratishedh Adhiniyam, 2004, and is currently in judicial custody. When asked whether the tip-off came from right-wing groups, SP Sharma declined to comment.
